Bassem Youssef takes top prize at Esquire awards

Egyptian television talk show star Bassem Youssef has been crowned “Man of the Year” at this year’s Esquire Middle East Awards.

The 39-year-old former cardiac surgeon collected the award at a star studded event in Dubai’s Conrad Hotel on Thursday night. Youssef’s satirical show El Bernameg has earned him plaudits around the world and dubbed him the “Arab Jon Stewart”, with Time magazine naming him one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Other big winners included the man who helped launch Emirates Airline, Sir Maurice Flanagan, winning Lifetime Achievement, and Saif Belhasa named Businessman of the Year. Badr Jafar won Entrepreneur of the Year. Al Tayer Motors CEO Ashok took “CEO of the Year.”
